Skillinvest student Gordon Chong Chin has taken out the Metropolitan Chairperson’s Award at the 2022 Master Builders Victoria State Apprentice of the Year Awards.

Gordon received his award in front of 500 guests at a gala celebration at Marvel Stadium on May 12.

With approximately 150 apprentices nominated by their training provider or employer this year, Gordon was among 16 applicants to receive a major award.

All nominees were interviewed by an expert panel and judged on the following criteria: interview preparation, passion for work and achievements, career plans, attitude towards and knowledge about the job, individual qualities, and industry representation.

Gordon completed his Certificate III in Carpentry with Skillinvest and was nominated by his trainer Russel Stratton. Gordon works for VARA Building Group.

Skillinvest Trainer, Russel Stratton congratulated Gordon on his achievements.

“When I first met Gordon as a first year apprentice, I thought that he was so confident and charismatic for a first year, that I could see him winning an award of this type in the future. This was why I nominated him, and I’m so proud of him that he did just that.

“We have seen Gordon grow as an apprentice and this is a great award to acknowledge all of the hard work he has put in,” Russel said.

Gordon said the feeling of getting his name called out on the night made up for the anticipation.

“Walking up on stage felt surreal and will be a moment that I’ll remember and treasure.

“I’d like to thank my trainer Russel, my boss Aaron, work mates from VARA Building Group and my family for the endless support during my journey,” Gordon said.

The panel of judges commented on how strong the field of nominees was this year, indicating that Victoria’s Building and construction industry is in great hands.

Gordon’s award follows recent Master Builders Regional Award winners who were nominated and trained by Skillinvest: Zachary Walter, Developing Leader Award; Mitchell Crough, Future Builder Award; and Mark Hunter, Chairperson’s Award.
