School Based Traineeship shaping futures for young Indigenous and CALD students
Skillinvest, alongside Jobs Victoria and Victoria Police provide a School Based Traineeship Program that sees young Indigenous and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) students work in a police station one day a week while still at school, achieving a Certificate III in Business at the completion of their traineeship.
Since its inception in 2016 this program has seen high rates of young Indigenous and CALD students achieve successful results in a pathway that can lead to a range of promising opportunities in the Police force or other government departments.
Supported by Skillinvest, Jaynaya undertook a traineeship with Victoria Police in Warrnambool and completed her Certificate III in Business while working and studying at school.
Jaynaya’s hard work and motivation to be a leader for the younger Aboriginal generation led to her winning the Victoria Police Outstanding Leadership Award in 2021 and the Victorian School Based Apprentice or Trainee of the year in 2022.
Jaynaya says this opportunity has helped to shape her future, and she encourages other young people to join the Youth Employment Scheme.
This video, produced by Jobs Victoria, features Jaynaya who is a proud Gunditjmara woman and just one of the many successful participants in this program.
